GOOGLE ANTHEMS (2018)

This on-going project consists in a video series of people living in The Netherlands (a country where a significant amount of different nationalities live), who were asked to sing their national anthems in English, translated via Google Translate. The patriotism of every anthem is transfigured through the process of automatized translation and the consequent singing performance, creating an ironic, almost humorous effect. This is raising questions about nationalism, cultural identity and its differences in a digital society, which privileges the identical and undifferentiated. Every video piece is to be intended as a result of a relational practice, an encounter between the author and these people in a private space. They are not professional performers, so the possibility for a spontaneous approach is left open during the process.
